JSully
I don't envy you having to make those decisions. Thank you for maintaining this forum. Also, thank you for ponying up the extra cash for bandwidth to allow pictures to be hosted here so easily. Hat adds a lot to the forum. I'm still flabbergasted at the dogpile in the clavichord thread. Yeah, Lyndon can be one of our more...abrasive...members. But still. Some posters spend entirely too much energy on grudges and manifesting vitriol, IMO. I just don't understand. Surely they can find something better to do. Like practice their scales, sharpen a tool, take their wife out dancing, play a board game with their kid, SOMETHING... Maybe we could have a 'completed works' forum? We have the luthier exchange now. The keyboard forum is dead and still exists, so I don't see any reason not to have another forum without a lot of traffic, if it serves a specific niche(like the luthier exchange). I do,hope it is allowed for EVERYBODY to post their instruments. Seeing lots of amateur instruments is encouraging on a personal level, but it is seeing great instruments, and the input from their makers, which is so educational. I don't see it is any more dangerous in drama or commercial promotion potential than the auction scroll, to be honest. But! I am obviously not the moderator. In the future, would a link to a 'hey, here is a blog post on my newest instrument' be allowed-so the discussion is off site?
Carl Stross
As for the removal of the threads, I think that we should all consider-if we haven't already-that the 1st Amendment doesn't apply here Nobody thought it does - it seems to be a Canadian forum. Bill Yacey
I haven't reads any subsequent posts on either of those threads since Saturday; Without surprise, it seems things went out of control. It appears to me that Lyndon's thread started simply as a means of gaining some respect and acceptance of his skills in woodworking; there is nothing wrong with that intention. Unfortunately, numerous times in the past Lyndon has drawn attention to himself through inflammatory remarks and discrediting others, and then assuming the role of the poor victim when others lash back. People don't quickly forget that; You reap what you sow. To be fair, I have seen Lyndon exhibiting comparatively more control in recent times with the exception of a few lapses here and there. I am very surprised by the deletion of Manfio's thread. Whatever transpired must have been since I read it last. Manfio has always been a model example of good manners and forum etiquette, being always free with his time and knowledge to help others, above and beyond what anyone could ever hope to expect. I seriously hope Luis reconsiders leaving the forum, it would indeed be a great loss. It's unfortunate in the past we have had many people with great knowledge and experience leave the forum due to personality clashes and undue lack of respect. CarloBartolini
Carlo, you’re way too mellow! You need more stress in your life! . It has been about 100ºF for the last 2 weeks down here, I think my brain cells have melted. Jeffrey in some way is kind of a chief here, toughest job in the world, you have to decide based on you feel/experience and always someone will not like you for it, as a record producer toughest part of the job was making the decision I believed it was in the song's benefit (my job), which many times clashed with someone's view, and did not have much time to explain it, just had to move fast, if you don't trust your instinct, how can you do anything, how can you make a decision? And there are the tough days, the weather changes, we feel strange, have been working too hard, make mistakes, we are human after all....forgive and forget. jacobsaunders
I, for one, was looking forward to learning what a clavichord sounds like, since I have never heard one before. I have been taken pity upon, and have been sent an email with a clip of Lyndons clavichord. Should anybody else want to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ukKnxXoIKxI
jezzupe
As Jeffrey said, it was a "difficult decision". Unfortunately, anybody who might perceive justification for that decision has already been branded a "total AHOLE" in advance. But hey, that's me. So here's a thought - if Melvin, for instance, could be forced at the point of a gun to deluge us with photo essays of each new example of his work, I for one would be learning something new every time. On the other hand... Nevermind.... So I assume you are one who likes to impart negative vibes? If you read the statement it clearly asks "who is the AHOLE who imparted negative vibes? A question to all. Somehow for some reason, and it sickens my stomach to think that someone was most likely PM'ing Jeffery to suggest he remove the thread....And yes anyone who would do so is an AHOLE in my book, as well as anyone who supports such a position. Should anybody else want to listen: https://www.youtube....e&v=ukKnxXoIKxI Fantastic sound - it suffers a bit from YouTube wooziness but the recording's got wonderful ambience and the instrument is so right for the music. edi malinaric
Hi All - as far a self-advertising goes - do prospective buyers reads Maestronet? I appreciated the clavichord pictures and the work that went into building them ( A friend built a harpsichord - mammoth job) and I dream of a finish such as Manfio achieves. I'm a little sorry that Jeffrey had to intervene - maybe he just had a bad hair weekend. A happy festive season to all - edi

Should anybody else want to listen: https://www.youtube....e&v=ukKnxXoIKxI When I still used to play the harpsichord in an early music group (before needing titanium screws in my arthritic fingers) I had to do the maintenance (voicing and tuning) of the instruments upon which I played, so I have a bit of technical knowledge and practical experience. I have only had a go at a clavichord once, but I feel I can say with some justification that what can be heard on that recording is simply awesome. Stephen Byrne
By Jeffery removing the two threads it has brought out the best in everyone IMO. It's really nice to see members defending and supporting one another, a Big Group Hug so to speak. Perhaps he should remove more threads in future so we might have a better forum. Keep up the good work Jeffrey!
Jacob
So I assume you are one who likes to impart negative vibes? Somehow for some reason, and it sickens my stomach to think that someone was most likely PM'ing Jeffery to suggest he remove the thread....And yes anyone who would do so is an AHOLE in my book, as well as anyone who supports such a position. No need for conspiracy theories. It's in the math, as they say at political conventions. Would you care to do a tally of personal work photo essays as far back as you'd like to go on this forum, and give us a breakdown of the authors? One person's "sharing" may be another's "exhibitionism". It is my personal opinion that Manfio - as he indicated in his most recent post - would welcome constructive criticism. However, it would seem to me that the way the glamorous photographs enhance the effect of the varnish job has resulted in an overwhelming chorus of acolytes which reacts with remarkable viciousness to anything not in tune with said chorus. In that sense Manfio's photo-essays have increasingly produced a monotonous, unedifying and unenlightening chant of uncritical acclaim. This I believe is doing a disservice to both Manfio and this forum. And having said that, my dear jezzupe, is why I have no doubt that I have earned your classification as "total AHOLE" - I'm not in tune with the chorus/I'm "imparting negative vibes". I just got it wrong when I thought this was a discussion forum, not a zone for stream-lining vibes.

NewNewbie
I will miss Manfio's posts. I hope that he reconsiders. As for the removal of the threads, I think that we should all consider-if we haven't already-that the 1st Amendment doesn't apply here, and the board isn't attempting to be a democracy. On a Internet board, you wish that adults could act like adults and respect each other, but perhaps this is a microcosm of society as a whole. We aren't being as nice to each other as we used to be. We have a Benevolant (sp) Dictatorship and Jeffrey performs a difficult task, uncompensated I am sure, and we should be thankful for it. I have been terse with a certain poster, in the past, so I understand the frustration... And where would you say The First Amendment does apply ...... anymore? Sorry couldn't resist the joke! ======================================================================================================== You can't legislate good behavior. Ban someone and they will just come back as someone else, and twice as bad. How else can one explain someone with thousands of posts being attacked by someone else with only a handful of posts. Less and less major posters are posting here, and soon you will end-up with a forum not worth reading. We all need to check our personal private agendas at the door, and leave the world's problems there too. Learn to disagree, agreeably, and when in doubt, the person volunteering their time gets the break. And while Jeffery's name is at the top of that list of volunteers, his is not the only name on that list. As to MANFIO's posts, I consider them to be the seminal seed that started the 'What's On Your Bench' threads, as everyone enjoyed seeing the excellent work one member was doing here. As to self promotion, how can anyone posting anything about their own work not be seen as self promotion. But MANFIO followed-up his 'tease' by delivering the goods, sharing his varnish formulas and methodology. How can anyone who has helped so many people be lumped in with others who have not? Another case in mind, just to list one ..... "Carving a scroll step by step (or almost)" So let me take this opportunity here to just say to MANFIO a heartfelt Thanks for all his great posts!!! I appreciate all your effort, and I hope you sell a million violins, or if you don't want to do all that work, then a violin for a million .......yen! What's that you say, a viola instead of a violin! lol Alright a viola it is! So folks just remember that when you slide into second base, keep the spikes down. That second baseman has to go to work Monday morning! Ahh the good ol' days! New modern twist on an old concept! Oh and to be fair to those who don't know baseball..... I think we would have all be better off if we had just all learned to play ..... Now I do not want anyone to think that this post is in anyway 'self promoting' , but I should like to add that I am now in the business of selling Sporting Goods, and we just happen to have on sale right now ............ . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Stephen Byrne
No offense to wolftone, but the attitude inserted into the "why didn't you post it with everyone else" really says' it all No offense taken jezzupe. There was no "attitude" in my question to Manfio, it seemed like a fair thing to ask considering very few members post separate topics with bulk photos of their work. New members often do this but you have to admit it's unusual for seasoned members such as Manfio to do it.
jezzupe
I would just like people to be able to post individual post's and show off their work, regardless of how many post's they have or regardless of how much international notoriety they have.... Somehow if Burgess decided to post a huge post with big pictures I don't think anyone would be complaining. If he did it often I don't think people would complain either. If bandwidth and storage are the issue, that is a separate issue from this one in my opinion.
