Thanks Rue!

I find it sounds darn good, very similar to the viola "La Mer" picutred above.

It is the 10th I make with this new model, two are with principals (Kammerphillharmonie Bremen and Korean Chamber Orchestra), one in the Gewandhaus Leipzig, one with a teacher and soloist in Amsterdam, etc.

Luis, Just took a tour of this thread and great to see your usual flair and enterprise.

I really like the B & W pics as well. They contrast nicely with the gorgeous colour snaps.

Did you use any particular 'del Gesu' as a model for the Guanerius fiddle?

I enjoyed the Mozart & Frank pieces.

Just out of curiosity, how did the Korean Chamber Orchestra violist contact you?

Omo.

Ciao Omobono! E lodato sia il N.S.G.C.!

Thanks!

The violin is inspired in Del Gesù, I wanted to try something different from the Cannone so  I used the soundbox of the Lord Wilton, the scroll of the King Joseph and the f holes (parallel f holes) of the Plowden. The parallel f holes (a feature in my violas too) favours the creation of a long and wide plataform in the top, that favours the basses, I think.

The Korean Chamber Orchestra came here in Sao Paulo to play (the Korean colony here is huge) and the viola principal Jayyoon Kim emailed me and we met in his hotel. He had just to day to decide about it, quite a nice player, he uses the viola for solo and chamber music too. Do you know him?  It is incredible how Koreans love music!!!  Hope to visit Korea someday in the future.

No, but interesting story. I see he has quite a strong profile on Korean websites. Good for him! (Good for you!)

You have to get the wood a bit dark, otherwise it will be difficult to get a dark coloured varnish, you can use very strong tea till get a good colour. You can brush more tea over the flames to enhance them. I use marciana varnish dluted in turpentine, it also helps, again you can brush some of it over the flames to enhance them.

But varnishing is a bit impredictable.  In some Strads the flames are dark, in others they are not.

This goes well with my work, which is not clean and neat, I would use other method if I had a neat and clean work.

You can use the alizarin and bone black with other oil varnish. Always make tests.

How do you prevent the stain from soaking or wicking into the spruce?

This is the lower block, it will be covered by the endpin hole.

Michael, it will depend on the spruce...  I will use some thinned glue or albumin in the places I see that are absorbing too much stain. Players will not notice that, they judge the overall appearance. But if I had a clean and neat work I would probably not stain the wood.
