Roland
Hi Luis, a baroque viola -- that's cool! How did you attach the neck? I love the angled shot of the back of the Barcarolle. It is great to have you back at Maestronet! Roland
MANFIO
Thanks Roland! The baroque viola is not "urtext", the neck was fitted when the back was glued to the ribs and the ribs still on the mold. The neck was then trimmed to accept the belly in the baroque style. The neck was a bit tilted back too. For the fingerboard I used ebony veneer over spruce. These featurs were discussed with the player that comissioned the viola. Roland
Thanks for the reply, Luis! BTW, I remember that you wanted to try Kremer's translucent iron oxides. Did you come come to any conclusions re these colours? Best, Roland
MANFIO
Roland, I did received them but made no serious tests till now... I imagine they work well, but I am currently using Terra di Siena Naturale pigment for the ground, Alizarin Crimson dark in Oil (Kremer), Bone Black in oil (Kremer) and some bitumen (pitch). Guest
Are you using SN and tea still to darken wood?
MANFIO
Thanks! Yes, the same method Ernie. Thanks!
Guest
And how many coats does it take to get the flame that dark? I have to try this someday. I have the Alizarin and bone black in oil from Kremer. Nice! Unfortunately I no longer have any of Koen's varnish.
MANFIO
You have to get the wood a bit dark, otherwise it will be difficult to get a dark coloured varnish, you can use very strong tea till get a good colour. You can brush more tea over the flames to enhance them. I use marciana varnish dluted in turpentine, it also helps, again you can brush some of it over the flames to enhance them. But varnishing is a bit impredictable. In some Strads the flames are dark, in others they are not. This goes well with my work, which is not clean and neat, I would use other method if I had a neat and clean work. You can use the alizarin and bone black with other oil varnish. Always make tests.
