How to make a hit on ebay!!

When you sell on ebay, and when you add a counter to your ad, ebay registers the number of "views" on your violin, or on a sellers violin when they have a counter. I have a violin with 280 views, I always assumed this means the number of times people have clicked on my ad, not the total number of viewers, regardless of how many times they clicked on the ad

well i was concerned enough to call ebay customer support, which actually provides phone support unlike so many other internet operations. the customer rep obviously didnt know the answer as it took another 10 minutes on hold, and low and behold, i was wrong;

views refers to the total number of viewers, not the higher number of how many times your ad has been clicked on, assuming some of your viewers clicked on the ad more than once, so im happy; 180 people have seen my violin, now if one of them would just buy the damn thing!!!

well i just checked, pahdah, or should i say the dos equis guy, has 2807 people that have looked at his Roth ad, i guess im not so hot after all!!!

Lyndon, im not so sure. Ive tested this on the occasional that ive listed something on ebay. I might go back several times to edit the listing,in the first couple of minutes of it going live.I notice the counter goes up by the amount of times ive edited it. It may be coincidence ,i dont know.

it doesnt register at all when i look at it and dont edit it, i hope ebays not feeding me disinformation, it would be quite simple to test, just have a friend thats seen the ad click on several times and see if the counter goes up

You can check by refreshing your page, early IT platforms would refresh all info on the page, this seeing you as a new "hit" To eliminate traffic and "fraud" in search engine results when you refresh it does not see you as a new hit unless something on a page has changed such as it being edited.

When I started by business and the internet already had a foothold, I hired someone for a month to stay on my site home page and keep hitting "refresh" in about 2 weeks I had the #1 search engine result on Yahoo and Google.... but you can't do it anymore.

I agree with Lyndon. The hit counter is supposed to count what are called "unique page views". Most items on eBay get between 15-25 unique page views in a week. The auto category has higher numbers, especially for the eye candy cars, like exotics and limited edition fabulosos. The violin category is among the highest viewed category and produce among the largest numbers of watchers. It is possible, although I do not have the metrics to be certain, that 2800 views is probably the highest in the entire antiques category. Right now, the Roth is the second most watched auction item in the antiques category. There are people selling fixed price mass produced items in volume in the category and they have more watchers, but as far as auctions in the antiques category on ebay, this is the third highest watched item, with the most bids and highest price. I have often said that the market for old violins on eBay is liquid. I do not know of another category that is similar in that respect except automobiles.

well its a lot more complicated than i thought, i just went to my site clicked on two of my ads, the first time i clicked on the counter went up one, the second and third time i clicked on it didnt move, mind you these are two listings i probably havent clicked on before, since my last edit, so it was seen as my first "visit"

i just went back to ebay clicked on again, this time nothing happened

Confirmation, i just linked to pahdahs Roth ad read the counter 2818 then kept going back and reclicking on the ad, 4 times but the counter didnt budge, stayed at 2818

not so fast i just went back to pahdahs roth now its up to 2822, either it registered my 4 hits or 4 new people clicked on in 3 minutes!!

waited about the same time went back, now its up to 2827 except this time i only clicked on once, obviously we have to test this on a seller thats getting less traffic.

went back to my lowendal which i know ive looked at since my last edit, and the first time i click on it goes up by one

clicked on my instruments for sale link below and clicked on the lowendal again, this time the counter didnt move

Lyndon, the counter looks at the IP address and possibly the member identity. If they're not on the list, they get added and the counter bumps by 1.

But with IP addresses being assigned dynamically, the same person can come back each time they reboot their system and get counted again as long as they're not logged in to ebay itself.

So it's best to treat counter totals as approximations only.
