i dont think so, otherwise the worn spots on the top would be dark too, just a dark varnish, i think

guaranteed to be 18th century, i guess it must be real then???????

I have a G. A. Pfretschner catalougue from the 1870s with exactly these pegs in. I wish they would still make pegs like that. That will be about the age of the fiddle too. If you bear in mind that the bloke had about 12 hours to make the violin it isn't as bad as you are all making out, once it were cleaned and retouched, it would be better than many I have seen. The scroll profile is actually quite nice.

i wasnt doubting the pegs could be that old, i was doubting they were original to this particular violin,
