lyndon Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 i dont think so, otherwise the worn spots on the top would be dark too, just a dark varnish, i think guaranteed to be 18th century, i guess it must be real then???????
Dave Slight Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 Mmmm, lovely...... That must be the nicest violin i've ever seen!
BobH Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 A fire might be an appropriate destination
Will L Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 I would buy the violin for the pegs alone. Then I would remove the pegs and burn the violin. Then I would burn the pegs, too, just on general principles.
lyndon Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 i sumise the meeting of these pegs and this violin was quite recent
jacobsaunders Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 I have a G. A. Pfretschner catalougue from the 1870s with exactly these pegs in. I wish they would still make pegs like that. That will be about the age of the fiddle too. If you bear in mind that the bloke had about 12 hours to make the violin it isn't as bad as you are all making out, once it were cleaned and retouched, it would be better than many I have seen. The scroll profile is actually quite nice.
vathek Posted October 22, 2012 Author Report Posted October 22, 2012 Those pegs look huge. I wonder if the are viola pegs?
bean_fidhleir Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 Didn't I read here on MN years back that the gypsies used to black fiddles like that to get them across borders without strife?

match Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 I am sometimes surprised about the nice fittings on some german trade fiddles. Recently found this:
vathek Posted October 22, 2012 Author Report Posted October 22, 2012 those are nice fittings match, Germans are known for their fine woodcarving.
Addie Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Somebody needs a better copy of Lütgendorf. That halftone pattern is so cheesy.
Violadamore Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 You think that one's hilarious, look at this one : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Antique-Machine-head-Fine-painted-4-4-Violin-RARE-/320996774953?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4abce61429
Addie Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 OK, it retailed for $5.50, but more interesting than I thought... Decalcomania strikes again!
