relicxn Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Hi, so i bought this violin, the man i got it from said its at least 200 years old. but I'm having a rough time trying to find anything on it... I'm going to take it to my Luthier and get his opinion, but thought id see what you guys think about it. thanks in advance
lyndon Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 the labels written in czech, i think, the 1902 written on the scroll sounds about right, the neck is collapsing, hence the wedge between the neck and fingerboard, if you read the name of the maker off the label, perhaps someone could tell you more
martin swan Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Hungarian not Czech Don't suppose the name is Horvath Andras?
relicxn Posted September 7, 2012 Author Report Posted September 7, 2012 here is a better pic of the label.
jacobsaunders Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Schönbach cottage industry, ca. end 19thC, with hungarian dealer label (hegedukeszito mester = Instrument making master). Not worth repairing, spare parts/dustbin
lyndon Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 one mans czech is another mans hungarian!! sorry about that seriously though, if its playing well and you like it, you might say its worth a couple hundred $$$ but with the defective neck that needs an expensive repair to be put in proper shape, the violin is not worth the cost of the repairs needed.....
germain Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Most probably an amateur violin maker. Very rough craftsmanship.
jacobsaunders Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 the artisans in the Schönbach cottage industry were anything but "amateur"
Wolfjk Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 The label says: "Improved (or regraduated??) By Toth Andras violinmaker.
