Given up on Ebay and Paypal

I cannot believe how low some of the comments are. My name is Georgina Walker, I live in Liverpool, UK.

I am not a fraudulent liar, I am here to learn. I cannot make very many helpful hints to others as I am still learning. If anyone starts on me again, I will report it and I will also ask for their real names so I can do something about it myself. This is complete character assasination and is, in fact, illegal.

You create your own environment by choosing how you act/communicate.

True, but when lying in a trough with pigs you're going to get dirty sometimes. I'm a lurker here who came back to reading the board after several years, I can't help but notice that there is a clique of negative posters and their hang arounds who really changed the entire tone of this board for the worse since I was here last.

Whether that opinion gets me banned or not I'll leave up to you, but it's getting ugly in here.

I'd partially agree with you. There have always been disruptive members on this site, but there are many more members here than in the past. You get the idea.

That also means there are many more pros, quality contributors and members with level heads than in the past as well.

While I may know "who" you are (moderator and all), I don't "know" you, but you don't seem to be the victim type. Free will and all. So... I invite you to be part of the solution rather than contribute to the problem.

I'll tone it down, sorry causing you the headache.

How do I pay for an item from another country on ebay if I don't have paypal?

Paypal skims a bit off the top but doesn't everyone that handles your money? My biggest gripe was when I would sell something and the hassle of moving it to my bank account, so I got a paypal debit card. It really is about the safest way to pay online at least in my opinion because I am not a big fan of giving my bank info everytime I make a purchase.

Nice to see such a quiet day on here, just remember: there are 3 sides to every story....yours, mine, and the truth.

You can pay by money transfer, sometimes credit card (if buyer allows it). You can pay by credit card through paypal, which means I don't have to have money sitting in the paypal account, but can benefit from the additional buyer coverage when something goes wrong on ebay. Last week I found this out, (great timing for this thread, though it got a bit too weird and I didn't want to post) and while I agree the rights are skewed in favour of the buyer, it is moreso skewed towards the buyer who pays through paypal.

As a buyer, I like the protection that PayPal provides in conjunction with eBay.

As a seller, I generally encourage my customers to purchase outside the jurisdiction of eBay and PayPal. This saves us on transaction fees and commissions which we pass onto the buyer. Ebay HATES this!

Thank you for that insight. I am afraid I have to disagree with you on that. I have been selling now for 8 years and in the early days, most people would have rathered have not gone with paypal from other countries and would rather pay by cheque, postal order or wire transfer. They did not trust Paypal.

For the last few years, the only way people will buy from abroad is through Paypal, with exceptions to the good old Germans who prefer wire transfer. Now, as I said before, ebay and paypal are not a safe environment to buy violins which are of a certain grade. If you want a cheap Chinese one, I'd say yes but as a seller, Paypal has had it's day and I am going ahead with prosecuting them. I sell through shops now and I get less of a good price but when you weigh up all the pros and cons of ebay fees and paypal fees, buying and sending them, then I end up about the same profits really.

My mentor sells some for me and I do his bows up for him (nightmare) but he is such a skinflint I have given up on making his ribs. Every maker knows how hard it is to do ribs well, I'd say its the hardest thing to do on a string instrument. So sod him for that! I know how to do them now anyway because he taught me.

Getting back to the subject. Unless you are backed to the hilt with wonderful plaudits and your little advert for your business under everything you write on here and othe forums and groups, then you may just scratch a living.

I will carry on regardless because it makes me happy to make violins, buy kits of violins too which I am not ashamed of saying and have never said they where totally handmade by me. Picking up old bows and giving them a new lease of life to a student. This lady came to me once and shed bought two violins off ebay. The first one was abismal but she wanted it setting up anyway so I did. The second violin was really quite a nice one. I knew it would sound good when I set it up and it did. Don't know what it was, I think it was an old Klotz copy but it had nice wood, was graduated nicely and no real damage. I set it up. Then I noticed she had an old bow in the case so I totally restored it. When she came and I played her the old violin with her bow she was over the moon. I only got £60 but to see her face light up when she heard it made my day.

Thats what its all about. Not coming on here moaning about how cheap the Chinese are and that they are putting you out of business. Cream seldom rises to the top in any of the arts and just because you sell a violin in a shop, doesn't make you a professional maker.
