Makers to copy: Stradivari, Guarneri DG and ???

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into violins to base future build efforts, and found that of all the makers out there, Strads and some Del Gesu violins seem to be the only ones people consistently recommend to amateurs.

My question is: are there any other makers that you would consider accessible to amateur builders? I thought about Stainer, but read that people get bad results from copying his work unless the violin is set up for baroque music.

I tend to like the look of Brescian violins... Any suggestions?

It's best to make whichever old violin you happen to have lying about in you're workshop, that you really like.

Ruggeri - Amati - Bergonzi - Guadagnini violins are fun to copy especially the scrolls- take your pic - heck even Lupot. By the way go check out Melvins sexy Ruggeri cello he just finished.

Fall in love with a model and do it again. Each time you learn something new.

I have totally fallen in love with the work of Bergonzi (every aspect of his work), but if I were picking a model to start with I'd definitely go for the Titian Strad. There's just WAY too much good information floating around on that one (for those of us who do not have something worthy of a copy laying around the shop).
