The pegbox

I used to paint them black in the past too, but Maestro Carlo Vettori told me that "terra di Siena bruciata" would be a better colour, so I mix some of this pigment in oil or other medium and paint the pegbox, inside of the f holes and the exposed end of the neck's foot (under the fingerboard) with it. And yes, it is matt too.

Carlo Vettori told me that the terra di Siena would be more discreet (less apparent) than the black. I found he was right.

I use black leather dye ,,on bare wood,,

applied with a q-tip,,

after the other finish is applied to the outside of the scroll,,

or the dye can bleed through the wood to the outside,,(on the back)

and stain it,, if it hasn't been sealed first by the varnish.

I like the way you can blend it between the inside box wall and the colored finish.

I have a bit of varnish sealing the edge of the box wall,,(barely)

You can rub the dye off till you can kind of see the wood grain,,but it is black.

That way it it has a soft edge translating from black to color.

I use Rustins, it dries very quickly.

After the varnishing is done I use a brush to apply the black paint to the peg box and f hole edges, takes about 5 minutes. Wipe the excess off with a rag. If I'm antiquing I rub some of the paint off and brush some grey chalk in there too.

Spidlen painted a violin blue, I found he was right coz he's a bloody amazing maker.

Why black? Greiner mentioned in the Stradivari Varnish book that he beliefs that Stradivari used black only to outline the scroll, but didn't use it in the Pegbox or the f-holes.

I think it does look nicer to have the pegbox in the same varnish as the rest of the violin. Having it in black is too dominant.

Cheers, Peter

Joe, the young Jan Spidlen made the blue violin.

He also won lots of competitions, comes from a family of great makers :

Never been a fan of expensive books, Peter.

Harris taught me to paint em matt black, and I think they look better matt black.

On this one I rubbed some of the paint off :

According to Sacconi, Stradivari left the inside of the pegbox unvarnished, I will quote him in Italian:

"L'interno della cassetta dei piroli non risulta mai verniciato, perché non 1o si riteneva

necessario e probabilmente per non rovinare le punte del pennello, come pure non è mai

verniciato il piano armonico sotto la tastieîa"

And I offer this free translation:

"The inside of the pegbox was always left unvarnished because he found it not necessary and perhpaps to preserve

the brush's point; for the same reason he left unvarnished the table under the fingerboard."

I agree with you Ben, Sacconni is dead, Strad as well I've been told, so who cares?

Strad nailed the neck to the top block, do we have to do that as well?

I like it black too!

"I wanna see it painted black, painted black

Black as night, black as coal

...

I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Yeah "

Since Sacconni and Strad are dead and nobody seems to care, why don't you just go ahead and paint the whole violin black. . . painted, painted, painted black Yeah!! :P
