polkat
I'm building a Chanot style violin (cornerless) and am thinking about leaving the ribs a bit thicker then standard to increase the strength, due to the lack of corner blocks. I'm wondering how thick I can go without having trouble bending. 2mm? I'm a proponent of Craig Tucker's cold bending method. Any suggestions? My thinking is that you don`t need to make up for no corner blocks. I would not make the ribs thicker than 1mm.
~ Ben Conover
No need to make the ribs any thicker than usual. If the ribs are well flamed don't leave them thick or you'll have a hell of a time bending them. Got no idea what the 'cold bending method' is, I use a hot iron a wet cloth and a bending strap.
