I've only been able to use the inset image tool to link to images on other websites where I have uploaded them.

This is a really old thread. I hope someone with the info sees our posts! :D

I'm also having a problem posting any pictures. It's really frustrating because it takes so long to take them, download them from the camera, convert them to the correct size etc. and then write out the post, for them to fail to upload.

As I don't know what specific problems you are having, I can only respond generally.

There are two upload systems on the board. Which one appears on your screen will depend on which version (flash or basic/standard) you've selected in your settings (profile). I find the flash version the easiest, but it does not work on some older browsers.

In both versions of the uploader, you need to upload your photo attachment first, then insert it into the text.

I'm inclined to think now that, perhaps I can't use the attachment function either because my browser doesn't support it (Safari) or maybe it has to do with a temporary limitation in relation to the number of approved posts I have yet to reach.

When I tried to link to the pictures hosted elsewhere, it simply wasn't allowing my flickr account, so I guess I'll have to set up another account.

If you plan to add photos of an instrument (or anything else) to the site, please size the images before uploading. If the image is larger than the average high res screen, it's very difficult to view (can only be accomplished by scrolling). If you need to illustrate a detail, please crop your shot.

Thank you!

On resizing photos:

There are now a number of very easy tools that let you resize photos. No Photoshop expertise needed.

Google's free program Picasa will find and catalog all the photos on your computer. Choose a picture, and click on the "Export" button. A dialog box comes up with a sizing slider. The default is to make the photo 800 pixels wide, which is a good size for a monitor. However, the forum might appreciate something a bit smaller and laptop-friendlier; perhaps 600 pixels wide.

Make sure to note where the new photo is being saved. You can change this path if you like, perhaps to desktop. (Picasa also has an online hosting feature, and you can easily send any photos there, and post a link.)

Now that the photo is resized, upload it according to Marc's tutorial.

Online services (Flickr, Imageshack, Photobucket, etc.) also usually have a resizing feature.

I have a question about uploading photos, and seeing this thread, I hope this is the correct location to ask..

I seem to be unable to upload any photos at all.  Is this because I am still a new member and under the 9 post threshold?

A year later -- these things get easier and easier.

There are some nice online image editors that make resizing a photo quite easy. Search for "online image resize tool"; there are plenty.
For instance, you can use http://rsizr.com/

With all of these tools, there is a basic distinction you should keep in mind. The display size is one thing; that was referred to already. That's how big the image looks on the screen, and if it's too big, you have to scroll and it's very annoying to the readers who *don't* use a browser or plugin that automatically adjusts the display. If you make your image, oh, 3"x5", you are setting a display size.

The other thing is file size. If it's too big, it makes the server slow and uses up a lot of memory, and is a pain to the administrators and IT folks at the forum, as well as to anyone with a slower internet connection. If you make you image 400x600 pixels, it will be nice and small.

So, on rsizr: you go there, it asks you to upload an image. click on the request, navigate to your picture, upload. Easy.
Then go to the tab on top that says rescale (the buttons look like tabs). Hold down your shift key, and click-drag the corner of the picture until it says it is somewhere around 400x600. It may look like it is getting too small. That's OK; that's just the display size.
Then click on the "retarget" tab. It will adjust the display size to 100%.
Then click on the "save image" tab. The dialog box will give you the option jpg or png. On a jpg, there is a slider for changing quality. The default is 70%, but 50% is fine for most uses. Save to your computer.

Now follow Marc's directions to upload to Maestronet.

My test image went from 1.5 MB to 38 KB. A HUGE file size reduction.

Most of the online tools also allow you to crop and do other simple edits.

Hello,

If I click on the image icon and put in the jpg number ... does this mean that my photo will appear

on my  post  ?

Because when I do this the image icon comes up on the post but if I click on it it just shows a jpg

number but no picture.  There is no point in posting without the pictures.  I use a mac.

I have been trying to respond to a thread but am unable to do so because I need to upload a few pictures

to make clear my intentions.   And now it seems that the momentum of the conversation has moved on

and I might have missed my chance.

New members cannot upload photos directly to the site until after 10 posts have been approved.  You can link to images uploaded onto a photo site.

As someone who is involved in graphics and editing, I hear you. Arranging and rearranging the size of the photos are important as well as their size before uploading them to a website. Thanks for the info on uploads on this site btw, as a new member I missed it. Cheers

I use an old Nikon D80 which has a much smaller pixel count than many newer cameras.

Because of that would it be correct to assume that I don't need to worry about the size of the upload?

Of course I can change the settings on the camera to take a large, medium or small pic. Would that be something I should consider doing?
