It is sort of a multi media resource on three fine old violins and on violin acoustics. There are CT scans, graduations, drawings, pictures, sound files and examples, acoustic data, impulse responses and modal analysis data. The only known datasets with 3D modal analysis from fine violins. Usually we see just the out of plane component of the movements. Also the in plane components of the modes are shown here. There is a demo at this site: http://strad3d.org/cms/index.php/strad3d-dvd-top

OK, thanks Anders. I was hoping for more of a documentary explaining these makers' theories about why these violins produce such a phenomenal sound.

I would believe much of the reason lie in how these have been treated after they left the makers. Thery are simply totally different instruments, different setup, bass bar, archings (probably) fittings and strings. That other anecdotical and rather speculative material can be found in the vast amount of literature already published.

Hi Anders,

It was great work and my only criticism of the project is that they didn't do the same testing on a couple of good and poor modern violins as controls.

Hi Marty,

I guess that is the case with much of the violin acoustics research. But what if bad violins can be bad in many different was, just as good instruments can be good in many ways? The good thing, though, is that players do not in general agree on what is the best instrument in double blind tests. But the players use to be pretty consistent with their own ratings of them. I do not know if really bad instruments have been in such double blind tests yet, though.

Does anyone know where this DVD set is available in Europe???

From http://strad3d.org point me to www.orpheusmusicshop.com for non US costumer, wich is out of stock and, after an inquiry fro me, they send an email saying they don't know when it will become available again.

I bought a copy of it this summer at Oberlin that I think was the last of this particular batch. If I understood Sam correctly, he may make some more later if the demand is there, but for now it might be unavailable. If you are interested, I would go to the Strad 3D site and e-mail about your interest. It may prompt more copies to be made.
