Michael Darnton Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Had a visitor in the Darnton & Hersh shop this week, and I shot a bunch of photos of details that interested me. Thanks, Jason.
Berl Mendenhall Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Great shots, I like all but especially the corner ones. Are there more?
Michael Darnton Posted May 14, 2011 Author Report Posted May 14, 2011 That's all. I spent most of my time drooling.
Michael_Molnar Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Lovely varnish. Flat f-holes. Graceful bee-stings. Artful edge work. Thanks! Stay Tuned. Mike
Janito Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Had a visitor in the Darnton & Hersh shop this week, Would you please provide some background on the violin, if possible.
NewNewbie Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Would you please provide some background on the violin, if possible. In the background is a picture of Jascha Heifetz. Does that help? Oh you weren't asking what the background was!!!! Thanks Michael for the superb photos!!!
Janito Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Does that help? Only if it is a violin associated with JH. The clue may be in the "Me and Her".
Janito Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Graceful bee-stings. To me these particular bee-stings don't look very graceful, and the corner short shows marked discontinuity between the spruce forming the channel and the purfling forming the mitre. These high-mag photos are mind-expanding when they show the Emperor's clothes.
chronos Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 That's Mrs. Blunt's fiddle. I'd call you lucky, but nobody gets to work on these kinds of instruments by matter of luck. More info on Tarisio's website: Lady Blunt pictures and article.
Janito Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 These high-mag photos are mind-expanding when they show the Emperor's clothes. And I see lots of flat surfaces on the "rounded" edges. The shot of the corner coming out of the photo is fantastic (underedge 8).
Michael Darnton Posted May 14, 2011 Author Report Posted May 14, 2011 I'd call you lucky, but nobody gets to work on these kinds of instruments by matter of luck. Not work on in this case, just held and got to take photos. This one hasn't needed work in about 40 years. I'd call me lucky, too.

These high-mag photos are mind-expanding when they show the Emperor's clothes. This is the violin of someone who doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. He's not making plastic telephones, and he's not worried about winning contests. It's pure and honest and a great piece of art, not an illustration for a fashion magazine. Whenever I see a real violin, I'm always reminded of this photo of Picasso drawing in persistence of vision with a flashlight:
Janito Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 This is the violin of someone who doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. Absolutely. And Art does not require micrometer precision, and it is not necessary to say that it is always wonderful.
actonern Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 What a week this has been for photos! Thanks a million Michael. E
Berl Mendenhall Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 That's all. I spent most of my time drooling. I wish, as I'm sure others here do, you could have had all day to take pictures of this wonderful violin. Thank you for the photos. We're all envious. Berl
Jack Rushing Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Had a visitor in the Darnton & Hersh shop this week, and I shot a bunch of photos of details that interested me. Thanks, Jason. Thanks Michael. Great shots of a fine looking violin. Appears to be in great shape, almost like new. Good shot of yourself too.
David Burgess Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Thanks, Michael. More info and photos here: http://www.cozio.com/Instrument.aspx?id=289 The sale is supposed to go toward disaster relief in Japan. It will be interesting to see what it goes for... maybe a public auction record? Check out Reunings blurb on the site, suggesting it's the next best thing to the "Messiah".
chronos Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Check out Reunings blurb on the site, suggesting it's the next best thing to the Messiah. You can read the whole thing here.
actonern Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 It really looks in "corner 2" photo that Stradivari relied quite heavily on mastic to finish (at least that) corner. The purfling looks highlighted in a different gloss than the mastic, revealing what looks like a pretty pedestrian joint, wonderfully finished with the additional putty... E
