Roger Hill Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 The single best recording of a solo violin I have ever heard. He plays a 1723 Strad. Absolutely stunning resolution of the sound and superb playing. http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/Drilldown?name_id1=11975&name_role1=1&comp_id=18772&genre=70&bcorder=195&name_id=157367&name_role=2

Roger Hill Posted January 2, 2011 Author Report Posted January 2, 2011 Brilliant Telemann pieces. Hadelich used the 1683 ex-Gingold for this recording. Good to know. His website says he now plays the above referenced violin. This cd was among my Christmas gifts from my wife, another being "the Miracle Makers." I found it quite interesting that among the Strads on those cd's, my favorites are the long patterns, which to my ears, have the low frequency character of the del Gesu violins. Thanks for the info. This violin (1683) is stunning in its tone.
Janito Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 This violin (1683) is stunning in its tone. Some of what you are hearing is the contribution of room acoustics that make the recording so pleasant. Compare to the recording in the discussion thread on Strad sounds by 1alpha.

Compare to the recording in the discussion thread on Strad sounds by 1alpha. Was recorded at St. John Chrysotom Church, Newmarket , Canada. The room, engineer, equipment, etc. are parts of every cd I own, but this one is really special, and only $7.00. I will check the other thread later.

The CD is on order, although I am captivated by Guiliano Carmignola's vision of the baroque violin. Do try 'J.S. Bach - Transcriptions for Unaccompanied Viola' by Robin Ireland on his Amati Bros instrument for a really great viola sound - available direct from www.robinireland.co.uk. Cheers, Ian

I've ordered that. Anxious to hear it. Hope you enjoy the Telemann/Hadelich
Ian Highfield Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 I have finally received the Teleman and it is all you describe - again many thanks. If you are enjoying Robin's Bach and are fond of that kind of solo instrumental recording, please try Carl Friedrich Abel 'Mr Abel's Fine Airs' by Suzanne Heinrich (viola da Gamba) www.hyperion-records.co.uk CDA67628. "This delightful release... Heinrich brings to them exactly the right blend of emotional involvement and earnest good taste, and finds pleasing resonance and smoothness in her instrument... an unexpected and atmospheric gem - I can almost hear the firewood crackling" - Gramaphone. Cheers, Ian

Cheers, Ian Glad you found that my elderly ears are still somewhat reliable. I am thoroughly enjoying Robin Ireland's Bach transcriptions. Beautiful playing, tone, all you could want. Now I've got to order another
