violin rib stock

Recommended Posts

The only time that I bought wood from Metropolitan Music (an advertiser here) the backs came with the sides pre-thicknessed to around 1mm. They just needed final scraping and bending. Another option might be to go to a guitar builders supplier like Luthiers Mercantile and see if they could thickness a set of maple guitar sides that thin. A set of guitar sides would probably give you enough sides for 10 violins.

I hate thicknessing sides so I find unflamed or lightly flamed wood at the hardwood store, bandsaw it to 1/8 - 3/16" thick and then use an electric handplane to quickly get it down to ~1mm thick. This is easier done using long lengths of wood rather than the short pieces sold as violin sides. When I do this I plane 4-6 feet worth of sides at a time.
