JacksonMaberry Posted June 2, 2022 Report Posted June 2, 2022 Synthetic bristles are quite good for oils, not so much for spirit. Taklon seems to be my favorite, and while soft, the brushes can be made stiffer with trimming, for thicker varnish. I find it easier to apply with maximum thinness with a softer brush and thinned varnish, but skill in application will trump equipment every time. I have stopped using brushes and prefer cosmetic sponges. It's about as easy as one can imagine to get a very thin, very even coat by padding in this way. I store them in a nonpolar solvent between uses. Whatever you choose, varnish early and varnish often until you're quite good at it! Good luck.
