Guy_Gallo
(This topic might be equally appropriate to the Strings section.) I was lent a lovely old French 3/4 violin for my daughter. Sounded nasal. Luthier took a look at it and pronounced the tailpiece too heavy. It was a Thomasik (I think aluminum). Weighed in at 26 grams.. We changed this to a Wittner, weight 22 grams, made of plastic. Tone improved. Still seemed a little nasal. So I looked, of all places, on Amazon and found this: Musaica Tailpiece Made in India -- in Rosewood and Ebony and Boxwood -- with a fairly ingenious fine tuner mechanism. Weighs 15 grams. The tone of the violin opened noticeably. Very noticeably improved.
