MANFIO
I think I will send this one to Gregory Singer in NYC, then I will take Alma Mahler, Fanny Mendelsohn, Clara Schumann and Stanzi to the Viola Convention and NYC. Well, my wife Gisela will be there too, she would not leave me alone with all these 4 ladies... You could make a viola and show up there too! MANFIO
That would not be possible without you Robert, thanks!
Dean_Lapinel
I have liked all your violas Manfio but this one is my favorite. This one seems to have a character or personality that is unique and special. This is an enormously inspiring work of art.
catnip
Beautiful pictures showing your attention to the smallest details. I like this classical varnish color. Beautiful scroll work.
PeSt
Manfio, what great instruments you made. I love the colour of the "Rebecca Clarke" (and the others too). Are you still using Magister varnish? And is the spruce you used from Europe? Cheers, Peter
MANFIO
Thanks! Yes, this is European spruce. Yes, I am still using Magister varnishes for the two coloured coats (I make the ground with my oil varnish).
Woodland
Well done! Was Simeon Chambers your source for the slab-cut maple?
NewNewbie
I always enjoy seeing your work and wish others would share like you do. Thanks.
Ernst
Fabulous and perfectly proportioned scroll. Of the two I like this one better. Maybe it's the one piece back? Do you make mainly violas?
MANFIO
Thanks! Yes Woodland, this back is from Simeon Chambers, I still have some here. Yes Ernst, from 2005 on I have been making only violas... I would like to make a violin, but I have another viola scroll already carved... Ernst
Being 16" violas they're not much larger than a full size violin. In the pictres the bodies look fatter than a violin. Aside from that and using viola strings what gives them that viola sound? It's got to be way more than strings otherwise you could put viola strings on a large violin and have a viola. Is it arching and plate graduation?
MANFIO
Ernst, these violas are 40.8 cms., violins are 35.5 cms. long, so these violas are 5.3 centimeters (53 milimeters) longer than a violin, and that is an Oceanic difference in our field. Yes, they are wider if compared to violins (25,5 on lower bouts). If you put viola strings on violas most of them will sound bad.... if you put viola strings on a violin it will sound even worse (although I have heard that Mutter uses a viola Dominant A on her Stradivari). Michael_Molnar
I finally got to look at this and I find it very nice. Mike
Ernst
I guess I didn't realize there was that much difference because I was thinking inches instead of cm. Thanks Manfio Ernst
NewNewbie
MANFIO can you say something about the sound of your wide violas compared to the narrower violas that you have noticed so far. Any differences or similarities. Thanks
MANFIO
Hi Newnewbie! I made just a few narrow violas based on the Strad model decades ago, I don't have them here to compare, but I am sure these new ones are better. I remember an article about cello making by Guy Rabut in a VSA Journal. He mentioned that Renè Morel told him that "square" outlines favoured more basses than "triangular" outlines, I think he is right.
DBurns
Have you also made your f-holes broader with the wide model? I really like seeing your varnish. My eye never seems to tire from seeing it. Thanks for sharing!
dand
I always enjoy viewing the work you post here....I do not usually make comments...but this time I must make the exception. This one really caught my eye and appeals to me...in all aspects. This one is simply a joy to look at. Lovely!!!
MANFIO
Thanks! Dburns, I made the f holes shorter this time.
