Geoff-UK
Thanks! Thanks for the link with Tom Lehrer, quite funny! Yes, almost no sandpaper, mainly on the scroll. Manfio - appreciate the pics - always good to see details. I have just closed the body on a De Salo inspired 420mm Viola and am just starting the neck. Do you have an optimum dimension for the nut width/string spacing ? The various sources of info all vary somewhat - to the point of nut and string spacing at the pegbox as the same as violin ! Nice to know what a viola player feels is right. Geoff - ( trying to work with an infected right thumb and slowly appreciating just how valuable our thumbs are ! )
MANFIO
Hi Geoff! Thanks! Yes, the neck is 24 mm and the string spacing on the nut is 17 mm. The thinnest part of the neck is 18.5 and the thickest 21 mm (with the fingerboard). There is no need to make it thicker or wider, I think, unless the player asks for that. It helps making the instrument light too. The measurements given by Terry Borman in his site good: http://www.bormanviolins.com/setupdimensions.asp
Matthias Lange
Very nice work, Manfio! Congratulations. Matthias

Thanks for the nice pictures.
MANFIO
Thanks! The neck is 150 mm and the string length is 375 mm, I will put the bridge in the place to give me those measurements. I posted a sound sample here some years ago of one of my violas being played by soloist Alberto Lepage, Harold in Italy, with the Cordoba Orchestra: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/91953/6596049/
Ken_N
The texture of the top is way cool. Your violas always look like your violas... and that is a good thing. Ken
Roland
Another great viola, Luis! I really enjoy seeing your work - thanks for sharing! Geoff, there are some valuable information on viola measurements on Helen Michetschläger's homepage, for example this transcript in her talks and articles section. And yes, I do like adding links
Geoff-UK
Another great viola, Luis! I really enjoy seeing your work - thanks for sharing!Geoff, there are some valuable information on viola measurements on Helen Michetschläger's homepage, for example this transcript in her talks and articles section. And yes, I do like adding links Thanks Roland ( and Manfio ) I do have a copy of her Newark lecture notes - they were quite useful in sorting out the model, which is a De Salo outline - but with my 'interpretation' of De Salo archings ! I will take a look at her homepage - as she seemed to make a good bit of sence. I have most of the measurements available online Prior ,Boorman, Centrum etc - but they all vary a bit. Also some useful info at http://www.alangoldblatt.com - though some of his instruments are a bit weird ! Geoff
