David Burgess
Schryer, Scott, Levaggi, and "inflatable fetish Goodfellow" are well known to me. Thanks for the info, I better bone up on the others. Who were the judges? Two Italian winners out of twelve? Bound to be some political fallout. Or maybe that has changed. martina hawe
Schryer, Scott, Levaggi, and "inflatable fetish Goodfellow" are well known to me. Thanks for the info, I better bone up on the others. Bone up.... ah, just learned a new expression I can bone you up on Marko, he was a pro bass player before coming to Newark (we were in the same year) he´s got a workshop in Finland and last time I spoke to him (at Oberlin) he said his time for making is limited due to him being swomped with double bass repairs, I guess he´ll be able to get more into making now his work is extremely neat Nick Gooch who came 2nd and 3rd also went to Newark worked at Winterlin workshop in Hamburg for a while and now has a shop in Munich Congratulations to both of them, hard work paying off! Peter Goodfellow
I can bone you up on Marko, he was a pro bass player before coming to Newark (we were in the same year) he´s got a workshop in Finland and last time I spoke to him (at Oberlin) he said his time for making is limited due to him being swomped with double bass repairs, I guess he´ll be able to get more into making now his work is extremely neat As Martina has said Marko not only is his work neat and well executed he is a very deserving winner and a great bloke the most important requirement. To fill you in there are many Cremonese makers and others scratching their heads as to why it won. It is a wholly honest instruments no flashy wood just class work. The judges couldnt attribute it to any particular school or country and all said it stood out as being different from all the other violins 205 plus. His violin cleaned up on the workmanship and left them for dead in the acoustic scoring. For me as a modern maker his work represents a freshness of approach, originality and individuality based on a firm classical base. For me that is the future of new making. Marko deserves his win and I wish him all the success for the future. So the tally is there were 4 ex Newark students and 4 Oberlin participants in the winners circle. Silvio Levaggi keeping Italy in the loop. And yes we all had a great time, Ariane behaved as well!!! Peter Goodfellow

joerobson
For me that is the future of new making. Marko Peter, Having worked with Marko at this year's Oberlin and last year's Noceto workshops was revealing...This quy is focused and really enjoying his work...probably more at the moment. I picked him as one of the "next generation". Occasionally I am right. Not only did he deserve the recognition, but I am sure we will see many more fine instruments from him. You and Silvio look good, but the cellos look great. Joe

Joe Manfio and Atomino Thanks for the message. Joe You might not be able to pick the winning horse but you got it spot on with Marko. And it is a breath of fresh air to see such young makers read him and Antoine Cauche doing some amazing work. I wish I was that far advanced at such an early stage in my career! So the future holds bright for these guys and where they can take it. As for Silvio and me we are no oil paintings! Although I like to think I am still 12 inside my head the photo says no!!!! David Burgess
I'd say stuff about Peter, but he could too easily retaliate. The bulk of embarrassing Oberlin pictures is in the possession of one whose name I can never reveal.
