polkat Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 I'm sure this has been covered many times, but I'm not having much luck with the search function. Does anyone have plans or can offer advice about making a homemade peg shaver (for standard 4/4 pegs)? Thanks!

polkat Posted December 11, 2008 Author Report Posted December 11, 2008 Wow! I mean no offence to anyone in saying that device seems pretty confusing compaired to some of the wood block homemade shavers I've seen pics of. Any other ideas? Thanks!
fiddleD125 Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 My personal opinion is to purhase an adjustable peg shaper. Fashioning your own peg shaper is just not worth your time. You can purchase an adjustable shaper about $40.00 that will do everything you need (1/8 violin through viola). You can adjust it to your peg hole reamer, which if you do not already have can be purchased for about $30.
David Burgess Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 Drill a hole in a block of wood. Use a reamer to bring it to the correct size and taper. Make a saw cut so that the top of this hole is barely exposed along its entire length, and clean up the sawcut surface with a plane. Clamp a plane blade to this surface. It may take a little experimentation and tweaking (amount of the hole exposed, and position of the blade) to get it working, but it can work very well.
