polkat Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 What is the average length of the flat upper part of the neck (from the scroll side of the nut to the end of the neck) on a full size violin? I have one here I want to use with the above dimensions being about 135mm (which would end up with the nut far side being roughly about 130mm from the edge of the plate). Does this sound right?
Melvin Goldsmith Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Measured from edge of plate to front of nut should be 130.....from what you say all seems in proportion
polkat Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 Make sure I have this straight (I've done this a few times but my memory is going). From the front of the nut means the pegbox side of the nut...right? And from the plate edge you mean the imaginary edge where it would have gone through where the mortise for the neck gets cut....right? Thanks!
Ken_N Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 I couldn't figure that out for a while either. Let me see how far I go before I'm wrong. The end of the nut means the side closest to the fingerboard, where the strings will stop. The 130 mm from there point is the rather vague point, that is the end of the belly right next to the neck. The neck actually goes past that point, to the edge of the purfling, or about 4 mm. If the nut is 3mm the neck top would be about 137. Cut it to a 130mm length and it is way too short! I think that's it.

No, that sounds like you are including the nut in the 130mm, which you shouldn't. the 130mm length would be the fingerboard length (excluding the nut) up to the edge of the top plate.
polkat Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 That's what I wanted to know, Jacob. I must have already known somehow because I compaired that to some of my earlier violins tonight and that's what I got. Thanks!
DarylG Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 6mm Nut + 136mm Neck = 142mm Additionally, some makers make the nut 5.5mm and/or extend the neck length slightly to allow for a deeper mortise. Cheers,
