Bigblueman Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 I am what is described as the family historian. I had been searching for and have finally found (after 10 years) my Great-Grandfather's violin. He carried this to the U.S. from Ireland in the mid 1800s. I can not see any manufacturing markings on it, but there is a very distinctive inlay on the maple back. The inlay is a fairly large circle with a Star of David in the middle. There is also some minor inlay on the neck of flowers. Its strange that an Irish Catholic emigrated with a violin with a Star of David on it. Now this instrument needs restoration. My son would love to hear its tone if restored if its worth restoring. Its not just because its his gggrandfather, but he is a direct decendent of Louis Spohr the German composer. I married into the Spohr family. If anyone has any idea of the maker of this instrument, it would be greatly appreacated. I supply pictures real soon.
