Barber Violin Concerto

Recommended Posts

I am so in love with this concerto right now.  The other day

Cho Liang Ling (spell?) came to our town and I had an opportunity

to attend his open rehearsal.  He played so beautifully and I

felt like crying it was so  moving.  So I downloaded Gil

Shaham's recording off itune.  His playing is also beautiful.

Do you have any suggestions on other violinists' recording of

Barber violin concerto?

Joshua Bell, with David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, on London records, 1997, has a recording of the Barber. The William Walton concerto and Ernest Block's Baal Shem are also on the recording.

Wow, I can't believe the Hahn recording hasn't been mentioned here! In my opinion, it's everything the Barber should be, and more. As a friend once described it, it's so good it's "uselessly good", as a lot of the academic goodness you can get out of it disappears because it's so hard to do it the way she does it (see: last movement).
