Suggestions for good violin collections/museums!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I’m just back from my first trip to Cremona, where I had
the chance to see the instruments at the Palazzo Comunale. It
definitely helps to see the instruments directly. The varnish in
particular can at least in my experience look very different on
pictures and posters. After this fascinating experience I wonder
where other great instrument collections are open to the public.
Can you suggest anything good (preferably in Europe).

Thanks

Fridolin

Yes, the collection in Cremona is quite good indeed. The varnish in the Amati violin is fantastic! There is also a museum in the Violin Making School.

If you live in Italy there is a fine collection in Milan, in the Castello Sforzesco. In Rome there is also the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali, but not entirely focused on string instruments.

In Oxford there is the Hill Collection in the Ashmoleum Museum, a very fine collection.

And in the USA there is the Shrine to Music Museun, in Vermillon, with a very fine colletion too, as well the instruments in the Library of Congress, Washington.

I remember the Smithsonian as having a decent collection, however it has been a long time since I visited. I am heading to DC this Summer with family and we plan to visit the collection at the Library of Congress. Does anyone know which instruments are currently on exhibit at Smithsonian?
