Woodland
Doe's anyone know what kind of violin Stephane Grappelli owned? I once saw a photo and thought that it looked rather nice and recalled it sounded even nicer...
Roderick Quiros
thought it was a Gofriller..
fiddlecollector
The one he used the most was a Cappa.
crazy jane
According to the old "Srings Magazine" interview with Grappelli (1994), his Montagnana was his favorite violin, but he also played on a Nicola Gagliano and a Giofredda Cappa. His bow was made by Frank Passa (of San Francisco). J.
fiddlecollector
He said a similar thing about the Cappa on a TV interview.I guess it depends what mood he was in!
tonewoods
This is prety cool... Too bad it cuts off right in the middle of Stephane's solo.... There's also a video of a "poker party" with Grappelli and Django that is pretty cool, but the link seems to be broken.....
apartmentluthier
I believe he also had a Benedetto violin from famous archtop guitar maker Robert Benedetto.
geerten
You're right, apartmentluthier. There's a nice picture of that Benedetto violin in his book about archtop guitar making. The book was mentioned in a recent post about tonewood. Geerten
polkat
In the early days (around the 1930's recordings) Stephane was rather poor, and used whatever he could get his hands on. On other forum I learned that Stephane was apparently quite stingy, and as the years passed, used poor instruments so that he wouldn't have to worry about them getting damaged. He got the Gagliano (Paris 1742) at the advice of his manager, when his wealth began to improve. I'm not sure of the other violins mentioned here, but he also used Michel Warlop's Pierre Hel violin (on loan), which he later gave to Jean-Luc Ponty. Eventually Diedier Lockwood ended up with it. During this period he also used the violin already mentioned by Benedetto. That violin has apparently ended up in some museum. What I'd like to know, but can find no info on, is what strings he preferred later in life??
BinkWms
Thanks for the clip, tonewood. I was at a workshop recently with Matt Glasser and Andy Stein and fell in love with what those guys could do with a fiddle. Needless to say Stephane's spirit lives on in the music of these young devotees. Do you know where to get some more of the clips?

There aren't that many films of Django and Stephane in action. You'll probably find them all at the YouTube site....
BinkWms
Outstanding! Another good resource for this type music, although not specifically for the violin is www.djangobooks.com. I did order a Schertler pickup from them and was pleased with the service.
