Vuillaume
I have a soft spot for French violins and I came across 1 that I am probably going to buy but the label is one I have not seen before. MADE IN FRANCE Made By L. Mougenot Jaquet Gand MIRECOURT France Great sounding fiddle and the price is well worth th sound and workmanship quality, I was just looking for some help with this maker. Beephormer
dear Vuillaume, who wouldn't love a french violin! I especially enjoy instruments by JB Vuillaume but that's for another thread. The label on your violin sounds suspicious, as far as I know, Gand and Jacquot were from the mid-19th Century and Mougenot is from the early 20th Century. Also, seeing as the label is in English it is probably a factory instrument made for export, possibly to the US. Regardless, if it has a great sound, is relatively inexpensive, I would say go for it! Cheers, Bee
Vuillaume
After searching thru google as suggested, I discovered that L Mougenot Used Jaquet Gand on his label for his mid quality violins. Jaquet Gand was his wife.

Assuming it is an original label (haven't seen the fiddle, but have noreason to doubt the label), you are correct is suggesting the violin was made for export. Leon Mougenot ran an Atelier (workshop), as did, for example, Deudonne and Roth. Instruments were graded and sold at different price levels. Mougenot was probably busier with books than with the knife, but most of what I've seen from the shop is a level above what I'd refer to as "factory" (like the less expensive JTL instruments).
