Kreisler question

Recommended Posts

I am a high school student who will be playing Kreisler's Praeludium and Allegro for an upcoming contest. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good recording of this piece. I only could find one, and my teacher was not pleased with it. Any other information concerning interpretation of this piece, artistic license in varying tempo (referring to all the 16th note runs), or anything else would be appreciated as well. Thanks,

G. Gossan

I wish you had specified what recording you found inadequate. Upon checking I found that my recording of Kreisler playing his own works did not include the Praeludium and Allegro in the style of Pugnani. However two others did:

Micha Elman Vanguard OVC8028 (1960 - late Elman)

Yehudi Menuhin EMI (references) 5 65693 2 (remastered from 1936 during Menuhin's best recording years). These should give you a real idea of the style especially Menuhin who was influenced by Kreisler directly (found Kreisler's style the only one he could not readily emulate during his prodigy years), held Kreisler in enormous respect and would not have recorded the works unless he felt he had adequately mastered the style. Elman is Elman probably not influenced by much but is an outstanding product of the era in which the works were written. What effect his advanced age may have had on this recording you will have to judge for yourself.

Watching someone play is useful for a student. The Eric Friedman plays Kreisler video (available from Shar) is interesting, although the quality of the video tape could have been better. But he plays your piece.

My recording of the piece is excellent! It has Nadja Salreno-Sonnenberg playing that piece along with many other fabulous pieces. It is on the EMI label and the name of the cd is "It ain't necessarily so"

I highly suggest you get this recording.

P.S. She plays the part with the 16'th note runs extremely fast.

G. Gossan, Praeludium and Allegro happened to be one of my favorite violin pieces. My recording is from ASV, CD entitled "Liebesfreud...Liebesleid", played by Oscar Shumsky. I find that Oscar Shumsky, although not very famous, played it very well. You can try it. I would like to know after you try the various recordings, which one your teacher think is the best. Remember to email me.

Good luck to your contest, hope you win.

I personally prefer the Perlman recording (Encores album EMI) Perlman is a great admirer of Kreisler and has recorded much of his music with flair and panache. He captures that Viennese salon style very well.

I personally prefer the Itzhak Perlman recording (EMI Enclores) as Perlman really captures the Kreisler Vienese salon style, lots of panache and emotional overload, which was part and parcel of Kreisler's playing.

Good luck in your competition. Most of all, enjoy mit lots of schlag!

A few years ago at my university library I came across a recording by Kyung Wha Chung (sorry if I massacred the spelling) that included the Kreisler- one of my all-time favs.- as well as a transcription of a Chopin nocturne (c minor) which I really liked. I've never come across it in stores and if worse come to worst, I'll go back and tape it, but has anyone seen this CD anywhere?
