Information on Grafting Violin Necks

I bought a Carlo Micelli Violin which had a missing scroll (posts below). I found a nice scroll I would like to graft. I have seen several methods on other violins and would like to know where I can find literature on the different methods. This scroll was cut off about 1/8" in front of the back (nut side) of the peg box and maybe 1/16" below the bottom of the peg box. Thanks

The best visual aid on this subject is the Weisshaur book- it is a

great reference manual for the luthier, with excelent pictures and good

directions. It is not written for the beginner but as a referencew manual

for the professional. If you don't have experience in repair I wouldn't

try it. I used to work for a shop who's owner had many years of repair

expierience in repair work, however I don't think he had a clue as to the

procedure and order of work involved in a neck graft. The end result was to

say it mildly, awful. Take care and I hope all comes out well. dave

Thanks Dave - I'll look for the Weisshaur book. Is it readily available? If I do a bad job, I'll just replace the whole neck which is the other alternative. I've done a few neck replacements.

: Weisshaar (correct spelling). I would replace the whole neck.

Glen,

Go for replacing the peg box. After all "it is only wood" ! If the box replacement doesn't result in your satisfaction you will at least gained the experience and can then undertake neck replacement .

The "W" reference book is great - I can't spell either.

Good Luck,

Paul
