David W
I was complaining to the village luthier about the harsh sound of my violin; he suggested moving the soundpost and also commented that my soundpost looks thin. He is talking of possibly replacing it with something of larger diameter. Is this a common problem? Has anyone had good results with this change? Also, is there a standard diameter for the soundpost? My violin is a low cost (under $500) German model, about 100 years old, if that helps. Thanks, David

I have replaced many post which have been too thin with good results, more importantly, the fit to the top and bottom must be exact regardless of the diameter. It would be wise to have a new one fit, and usually doesn't cost much. Many of the older violins I have worked on have had posts with the diameter of about 5.5 mm and they can sound good if they are fit and positioned properly. We're all familiar with those poorly carved home made posts that were made of woods other than spruce. I even saw one made of those old round popsicle sticks, believe it or not. You'll never optimize your sound without a perfectly fit post. Very important detail. After all it is the "alma" (soul) of the instrument. Good luck, Joe

As a matter of fact perhaps a review of the entire inst's setup should be considered. Paul
