steveg Posted October 14, 1998 Report Posted October 14, 1998 I just got an instrument that was a violin in the white, untill it was varnished some years ago. The wood however is out-standing, but the scroll is a piece of sh--, and the "f" holes are too narrow. The varnish was applied too thin with heavy coats so that it ran and dripped all over the place. None-the-less it could be a good student violin. Is any one interested in seeing a violin stripped, and then the steps taken to restore a good finish ?? steve

So "strip" away ! Paul
A. Brown Posted October 15, 1998 Report Posted October 15, 1998 Hello, I found that stripping was a whole lot of hand scraping with a plastic ruler. It took a long time. I was advised to use a non-toxic stripper, and considering how much I got on myself and things other than my viola, it was a good thing! What are you planning to use? I used Safest Stripper by 3M, but I was told one could use Citri-Strip too (but I didn't find any.) I am still waiting for varnish to arrive and have not learned yet what to do next. I could use an example. A. Brown
