questions on tail piece and sound post

I send a $8000 dollar violin to a maker for check up. He said that the distance from the tail piece to bridge is not right. And the tail piece will have to be shorten. Is it a big deal to cut the tailpiece? Is it going to change the style or the sound of the violin?

One more question: Why does the sound post have to be behind the bridge?

Thank you in advance

The method for lengthening the distance between the bridge and the tailpiece is to shorten the length of the tailgut or use a shorter tailpiece.Neither of these remedies is difficult to acheive, and it does sometimes make a big difference in respnse and volume. The sweet spot for the sound post is too lengthy a topic for this board. Suffice it to say that there are very clear physical/acoustical reasons why the soundpost works where it does.
