Alison Fields
Recently I changed strings on my violin and the tone improved greatly, but the strings slipped and I had to retune often. I was then told that the strings should be wound up tightly against wood in the scroll to reduce slippage. When this was done the tone seemed be dulled. What is the proper method to use when stringing the instrument? I would appreciate any help. Thanks
mike
new strings do stretch quite a bit when they are just put on. it may take up to a week before they settle down. you can prevent them from actually "slipping" by making sure that you have pulled enough of the string through the peg hole, and by wrapping the next winding or two over the initial section of the string. i sometimes do as you have mentioned with having the string against the pegbox, but this can be a bad idea as it chews up the inner wall of the pegbox, and occasionally will break the string. i would just say give them some time; if it persists and you have done as i suggested, then show it to a luthier. mike
Alan R
Hi Alison.. I would avoid winding the string such that it ends up pressing (rubbing) against the side of the "peg box" since this could (read can!) lead to a jammed peg or worse... a cracked/broken peg box ... which I don't think you want! Have fun ... Alan

Alan I agree with Alan. Perhaps the pegs could use some attention. Paul
Andrew Victor
: I have noticed that some brands of string (more than others) that sound great when first put on, sound duller after they have reached their full stretch - more on some instruments than others. I don't know why except that (1) I may be listening for something different while the string is stretching, and (2) the tension may be higher when the string is fully stetched damping the overtones. Thus this effect may be independent of your peg winding style. Andy
