sound post

I bought a violin. It came with an appraisal, and I was told it had been set up by the same violin shop that appraised it two years ago. The problem is, the bridge seems to be at the right place, but the sound post is in front of the bridge. I asked the seller how come, he said the violin was his daughter's and he had no idea. Any explanations? Thanks!

: Measure the string length from the nut to the bridge. It should be 13 3/4 to 13 7/8 inches. The sound post must be 1/8, to 1/4 inch BEHIND the foot of the bridge, other wise, some one is pulling your chain BIG TIME.

Arn't your numbers reflective of a 4/4 ? Is the instrument in question that size?
