Soundpost

Hi I have a decent french cello and just found out that the soundpost isn't completely parallel to the top(or wherever it is supposed to be parallel to). It seems like it's just a little bit angled, and I was wondering if this is making a big difference to the

sound of my cello. Would it be necessary to take it to a luthier(3 hour driving) and have it set up properly? How much difference can the setting of the soundpost make?

Thanks in advance for any responses,

Justin

Hello:

Normally the post being correctly placed makes a very big difference in sound...an improvement. This is tempered a little with the quality of your cello. If it is a low quality poorly constructed cello, post position is not too important...if it is a decent cello, makes all the difference!

Your call,

Al

This doesn't sound all that bad--it doesn't always have to be straight up. If there's nothing wrong, don't fix it; if you don't like the sound then there's something wrong with something (not necessarily the post), and you might want to give it a try. The sound is the important thing--not how the post should theoretically be positioned.

:Hi Justin-Soundpost is inside your cello and perpendicular to and attached to both top and back surfaces. You can see it by peering thru f-holes. If you are talking about the bridge, it should be perpendicular to top, with curved side in direction of tailpiece, and positioned slightly ahead(ie toward tailpiece) of sound post. However, if it ain't broken, don't fix it! Hope this helps.

i would definately have someone look at it. i have seen cellos and violins that appear to have developed cracks from the sounpost either being wedged in too tight, or the sharp end of the angle of the post was not sitting flat on the belly or back. i say if you are not sure, then take the time to have someone look at it, and if neccessary get it repositioned or replaced-who knows? i have even seen instruments with incorrectly sized posts just stuck in there by the former owner, or maybe they took all the strings off to clean, and dropped the post. then they stuck it back any old way they could. maybe you could work the trip into some kind of nice outing, and enjoy the sights.

Justin,

I think the correct word is perpendicular. If the sound post is not positioned correctly is will impact projection. If the soundpost is at an angle it may be indicative of a problem with its overall lenght . I have 2 basses which I am repairing the backs due to soundpost cracks. This is expesnive and driving 3 hours may be cheap if you wind up doing it anyway. Like the tv ad for oil filters says "pay me now or pay me latter". Have a reputable repair person look at the instrument - unless you don't care about it.

: I'm getting confused. To take it to a luthier or not..?

My soundpost sounds a lot like yours, not being completely straight. I took it to my luthier who said if I liked the way it sounded, he wouldn't mess with it. So we left it! But I did ask if it looked too long, etc. and he said it wasn't. That's what's important.
