Zepplin Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...N%3AIT&rd=1 I may have already sent this but it didn't show on my pc. I have gambled and bought this off of Ebay. I really can't afford it but I did it anyway. My son has great talent. Will this instrument sound better than is student instrument? Thanks In Advance
bean_fidhleir Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 It's funny, but that side view doesn't seem to fit with the top view at all. I would have thought from the top that the side would show a 'barrel' body. I don't know what's going on there. It looks like it could be a decent student-grade south-German fiddle from about 100 years ago. Given the apparent discrepancy between top and side views, I can't imagine what it might sound like, though.
Regis Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 Quote: "Will this instrument sound better than is student instrument?" That is a question tha no one can answer. Is one student instrument better sounding than another student instrument without handling both? If what he has now is one of those $29 ebay instruments, then yes. Other than that, it mostly depends on what sound you like (and can hear). There is at least one zero missing for it to sound like a professional instrument. Looks to me like you bought a nice, clean, several hundred dollar violin.
fiddlecollector Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 Its got what looks like quite deep channeling which is probably why it looks higher arched than it really is.
fiddlecollector Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 looks slightly Scarampella-ish! The wood used does as well.

Could that account for it, do you think? When I look at the play of light around the f-holes/c-bout in the top view, it looks as though it ought to have one of those 'look in one f-hole and out the other' archings.
fiddlecollector Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 I just see narrowish and deep channels and too much flash!
GlennYorkPA Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 I think you've done extremely well here. It's an 'old' violin (not sure how old but easily 19thC) but it's been give a bright, shiny coat of something which ruins any antique appearance but, hopefully, that won't impair the performance characteristics.
T_Rocca Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 seems like a interesting instrument to me! the scroll job makes me think that it should be a violin of a descent quality. I feel its been revarnished at least the clearcoat Glenn mentioned. I believe the pegs and tailpieces does make it looks like a student violin. However The Repairsperson is located in St.Catherine Street. I didnt recall is there a violin shop or some sort there but there is absolutely tons of tourist shops etc there now. And I dont think it is the kind which you can look one F hole in other one out kind.
fiddlecollector Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 The repair man was active in Montreal in around 1900. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl...6lr%3D%26sa%3DG
T_Rocca Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 I see, thanks. that was too much before my time
Richf Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 Don't forget: to get the most out this violin, take it a to a good set-up person. A well cut bridge, the proper scoop on the finger board, and a well cut and positioned soundpost will make this fiddle so much easier to play and so much better sounding. Enjoy.

Interestingly, the article mentions the father-son shop Lavallée et Fils. I've an instrument that has a Chas. Lavallée (the son's) label in, though I'd be surprised if it was made by him: my guess is that it's a high-class German factory instrument.
