zithromax Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 Any thoughts? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A%3AIT&rd=1
fiddlecollector Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 Interesting i missed that one, but i can say the most of the bidders are professional violinists.
zithromax Posted July 29, 2005 Author Report Posted July 29, 2005 No, I didn't even bid unfortunately. I thought the scroll looked very elegant, and the violin looked very nice, but it was just my gut feelings. I'm glad that the high closing price seems to support my view that this is a high quality violin, but I still can't quite pinpoint the features that make this violin look attractive to me....so any thoughts?
T_Rocca Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 I bidded on that. Even though it is a German I think, it is a pretty nice one
Jeny Mahon Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 Mittenwald maybe? I've got a similar one with an Asa White label in it.
GlennYorkPA Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 It's a fine violin but what is that remnant of a chin rest doing stuck on the lower rib?
Option1 Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 Glenn, I'm 99% sure that's for the shoulder rest. The actual shoulder rest slides into the attachment that's already on the violin (the bit you thought was a remenant of a chinrest). The shoulder rest itself is pictured in the 4th and last images. At least that's what I've been able to figure out ... I think. Neil
bean_fidhleir Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 If it's a high-quality fiddle, screwing a pickup-wire clamp to the back seems a bit of a desecration, doesn't it?

That's what I thought at first, but after looking at it further I'm sure the screws don't actually go into the fiddle, they go into a wood mounting block, which is held on with an upside-down chinrest clamp. Look at the photo about midway down that shows a side view of the whole fiddle and you'll see how it works. -Steve
bean_fidhleir Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 Ha! Yes, thanks, Steve, now I see it. I completely missed it the first 35 times I looked. LOL! (Looking more closely also showed me the dreadful varnish job, too. Yuck, it's got all dust in.)
