another interesting ebay violin...

Recommended Posts

No, I didn't even bid unfortunately. I thought the scroll looked very elegant, and the violin looked very nice, but it was just my gut feelings. I'm glad that the high closing price seems to support my view that this is a high quality violin, but I still can't quite pinpoint the features that make this violin look attractive to me....so any thoughts?

Glenn, I'm 99% sure that's for the shoulder rest. The actual shoulder rest slides into the attachment that's already on the violin (the bit you thought was a remenant of a chinrest). The shoulder rest itself is pictured in the 4th and last images.

At least that's what I've been able to figure out ... I think.

If it's a high-quality fiddle, screwing a pickup-wire clamp to the back seems a bit of a desecration, doesn't it?

That's what I thought at first, but after looking at it further I'm sure the screws don't actually go into the fiddle, they go into a wood mounting block, which is held on with an upside-down chinrest clamp. Look at the photo about midway down that shows a side view of the whole fiddle and you'll see how it works. -Steve
