Guy_Gallo
Oh. The image retrieval is no big mystery here. I made the collage. D'Espine, my fiddle, and an overlay of the two...
allezlesbleus
So how does it sound? How's it play? BTW, I can see pretty big differences between the f-holes in the OP. The similarities are fairly obvious. The differences are initially more subtle, but, once familiar with them, they are fairly obvious as well...did that make any sense? Guy_Gallo
It's a very nice sounding violin: responsive, sweet, even. The point isn't that the f-holes aren't different. I think any two sets of fs, even by the same maker, will show noticeable differences. In fact in one of the other threads I did an overlay of two different strad and two different del gesus -- and the differences were as marked as what you see here. I'll have to try and dig that one up.
Guy_Gallo
Couldn't find the thread I was vaguely remembering, but here is one of the illustrations I posted: Duh... this image was posted earlier in this thread...

Many makers do tend to alter the shape and position of their ff holes as they perfect their designs... and some makers used more than one pattern...however I don't think makers tended to suddenly abandon their workmanship styles and concepts; rather they evolved them. In the case of the ffs you overlaid above, a good portion of that change is in position not style... the lower portion of the ff is "swung out" yielding a more angled ff. Agreed. So maybe my top is a juvenile work by d'Espine I'm a fiction writer, remember.
