Michael Darnton Posted March 17, 2005 Author Report Posted March 17, 2005 It sounds a lot like a normal violin, interestingly enough. The gut strings have their own personality, of course, but it's not overwhelmingly different, nor is it particularly quiet or restrained. I think if I put a chinrest on it, most players would find something they could do with it. The most unusual thing is the Fear of tuning up the E string, which is very insubstantial looking, and it takes a lot of turning of the peg to get it up to pitch. It certainly doesn't need any fine tuners!!!!
DelDuca Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Hello everyone! One quick question from someone who has been out of the loop for a while now: Is the inked scroll a widely used detail of the time? It certainly looks fabulous. Saluti!
MANFIO Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Ciao Del Duca, é una buona cosa rivederlo qui! Some Cremonese makers (Strad and Del Gesù, for instance) painted the chanfers of their scrolls, as well as the joint of the ribs. Villaume did that too. Only instruments in mint condition retain this feature.
bean_fidhleir Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 What a completely beautiful fiddle that is, Michael!
