josefmills
I've had the desire for a while to get the right people together to start a string quartet... but I am uncertain as to how to find people my age that are available and/or interested to do the same. I live in Houston, so I know it's not that there's a lack of musicians here... any suggestions on how I might go about finding other musicians my age, that would be interested in starting a quartet? D_A
What's your age? If you're an elementary school aged person or an adult amateur, you might call around to private violin, viola, and cello teachers and ask if they have any students who might be interested. If you're junior HS or HS age, maybe Houston has a youth symphony -- that would be a way to make connections. If you're an adult amateur, check into the community orchestra scene (many colleges sponsor community orchestras) as a way of meeting people who might be interested in playing quartets with you. I used to live in Bellaire a long time ago, and at that time there was a university orchestra at the U of H and a community orchestra at the UH in Clear Lake City that both welcomed community players (I even played quartets with some people from UHCLC). There's also a group called Amateur Chamber Players (I think) that's a national group of chamber music lovers. There are probably some members in the Houston area. Good luck! josefmills
Thanks for the tips... I play in the Clear Lake Symphony actually. It's a great group. We don't rehearse at UH anymore though. We're playing Rach's 2'nd piano concerto on the 11'th, among other pieces. Thanks again, Josef
Stephen
Your orchestra network is likely to be useful. If you need an external resource, try joining the Amateur Chamber Music Players, which published a nationwide directory of people looking to form quartets and other small ensembles. nicolo
I have the desire also, but haven't really looked around for other string players. I've been playing the violin alone since moving to San Antonio. Maybe I'd be of age for a trip to Houston. If you get something going, but are missing a fiddle, send me a PM.
