Regis
What is the advantage or dis-advantage of making a mold out of 1/2" or 1 1/4" plywood? Does sealing the mold make it harder or easier when it is time to remove the mold? Thanks, Regis
Seth_Leigh
If you make it 1/2" you can install the linings on both sides with the mould still in place. Any thicker than 1/2" and you start getting really cramped; you'd like a little bit of space under the linings before you hit the mould. If you make the mould as thick as the ribs are tall then you gotta remove it before you can install the linings, and it will be very difficult if not impossible not to alter the outline. By the way, it may not seem logical that you can put both sides of linings in with the mould still in place, but it turns out that because of the pinched-in shape of the violin outline (pinched in around the center bouts) you can pull the sides out a little when you're getting the mould out and it will create a little slack in the ribs that will allow it to come off the mould. You can just seal the mould with polyurethane finish or something like that, it doesn't have to be very technical.
