Guy_Gallo
Inspired by the thread on PV Chinrest, I have a very nice rosewood, silver hill mounted chinrest branded Crowson and AA on the feet. Anyone seen this before?
Michael Darnton
Crowson is probably the best and most famous fitting maker at the moment. He's from England, and his stuff is beautiful. If you look at pix of Strads and Guarneris, if the peg are new, most likely they're his. I have no idea what the AA means, though.
Guy_Gallo
Thanks Michael. I'll post pics if there's interest. The most notable thing about the rest is that the feet are widely spaced (more so than stock). The seeming result is you cannot slide it around the curve of the fiddle as much as you can others. That is, it seems to fit best in smaller range.
nertz
“AA” is “Alexander accessories” run by Tony Mason. Alexander accessories have worked in conjunction with Gerald Crowson for some time now and I think made most of the Crowson chin rests and some of the tail pieces. Guy_Gallo
Thanks much for the info, Neil. I found a website for AA Chinrests Of those pictured, I'd say mine is a John Dunn or a Bergonzi. Hard to tell.

briancohenviolins
'AA' means Alexander Accessories, which is in fact the trading name of Tony Mason, the actual maker of these items- he also makes and supplies others, most notably 'Beares' and Soundpost in the UK, who is the largest actual stockist of these qualty items. bc

I e-mailed him and he phoned me personally, which goes a long way these days. He makes the fitting to suit your instrument so you have to post him a template of the bouts as a pattern. Your chinrest was probably made to fit that instrument alone. His price direct is way under Soundpost etc mark up. He does not make pegs - and as far as I know, Crowson does only pegs. AA, Otto Temple and Lorenz are all about the same as a trade price direct - but he does a much larger range. Geoff
