He wrote quite many sonatas for viola. Which one are you talking about? Hindemith is Hindemith, it will never (and isn't supposed to) sound like Mozart! Some of his stuff verges on atonality, although he never completely went there. Other pieces have more traditional harmonies. With him there is a great range.
