recent Khachaturian concerto recordings?

Recommended Posts

I had my curiosity piqued by watching Oistrakh and Kogan playing excerpts from this work on the "Art of Violin" and listened again to my old LP of Oistrakh. Have there been any particularly nice recordings since? Did Heifetz ever make a version? Any others from the Golden Age? Menuhin, Szeryng, etc. Newer artists?

Well, the recording I have features Leonid Kogan as the soloist, but it is not a recent recording (c. 1950s). I can't remember the record label, but I *think* the series is called "Russia Remastered."

Sorry that I can't help much more.

Oistrakh and Kogan recorded them several times and some of their later recordings are in pretty good sound.

This concerto seems to have fallen out of favor these days. One of the newest recording I am aware of is the Perlman recording from 1983.

Heifetz did not record the work, but there is a masterclass video that he coaches one of his student playing this concerto.

Among the oldies besides Oistrakh and Kogan, Elman, Kaufman, Taschner, Ricci, Julian Sitkovetsky, Szeryng, Thomas Magyar, Devy Erlih and Wanda Wilkomirska have recorded this concerto. Rampal made an arrangement for flute recorded as well. Among the ones mentioned above, Elman, Kaufman and Taschner are the ones I find most interesting (and very different from each other as well).

T.
