Prokofieff

Recommended Posts

We are playing his Third Piano Concerto (performance tomorrow). What a marvellous, inventive, melodic piece! I only wish the soloist wasn't going so dang fast.

I pity the poor first violinists! That's a killer part.

The soloist, Hubert Salwarowski, is built like a fullback. His technique is pretty dazzling.

He wrote five of them, if I'm not wrong.

Try to hear the sonata no. 8 for piano solo. The "andante sognando" è veramente un sogno di musica! I have it with Sviatoslav Richter.

Prokofiev (as well as Shostakovich) has a unique discourse, as every great composer.

One of our community orchestras is doing Prokoffiev 3 soon too. Brave, but they are quite a good group, so I'm sure they'll be okay.

I was fortunate to see Solzenitsen play Shostakovich 1 a couple months ago. Its still one of my favorite concerti - Shostakovich having way too much fun

It was a great performance, all around. I'm still humming the theme & variations (2nd movement). The soloist set some speed records.

(And there's QUITE a cello soli in the third movement, way up high in the snow country--a very haunting melody, which the violas then join in on the second time).

Yeah - for many composers there is some added poignancy to hearing the celli performing high over a chasm without a net. Though its true that anything played well on a cello sounds better than on any other string, still its dangerous country. That is a marvelous theme though
