Ysaye Violin Sonatas

Recommended Posts

Who do you think plays these well? Has anyone heard of the Zimmerman complete cylcle recording, comments?

I heard Gidon Kremer playing No.5 over the weekend... just amazing... The performance reminded me of his Bach recording. The phrasing, the triple/quadrupal stops are almost identical to the Bach recording he recorded 25 years ago!!! Isn't is funny how the Ysaye reminded me of the Bach?

Actually, Ysaye wrote these works immediately after hearing a recital of one of Bach's S&Ps for solo violin. I think Bach's solo works were the primary inspiration for these wonderful sonatas.

Yeah! My favorite sonatas. I've only heard two of them, and my favorite for the second sonata is by Ilya Kaler, www.ongaku-records.com/Ilya.html listen for free! And Leila Josefowicz's recording of the 4th and 5th on her Solo Phillips CD with Paganini, the Bartok Solo Sonata (which is also my absolute favorite recording of anything) and Ernst's Erlking.

wow!
