hk1997
Is there a national anthem that can compete musically with the Soviet Union's (current Russian) national anthem? I believe it was written by Shostakovich. Am I correct?
Scott Bailey
The music was composed by A. V. Aleksandrov. And it rocks, dude.
hk1997
Ah...thanks for the correction. Yes, in my opinion, musically superior to the Star Spangled Banner.
Holy Viola!
Can't vouch for the writer, but it is a very fine anthem. I also like the La Marsellaise (very probably mispelled). The rest vary, between awful and tolerable
Yojimbo
Well, the Star Spangled Banner is a heavily re-worked British tavern song called "To Anacreon in Heaven". When you borrow, you takes what you can get. It actually works better than one would expect, but the range makes it tough for an anthem - most folks can't cover it very well. We might have been better off with a real composer writing it, but its too late now.
Tropicalfruitmom
You'd be surprised at how many people think "God Bless America" is the national anthem.
oldgeezer
How about Germany (Haydn) or Austria (Mozart). Not bad composers.
linuxviolin
Uh, isn't "Austria" also from Haydn? It seems to be part of his "Emperor" quartet, second mvt. Great tune, also in most Christian hymnbooks.
Yojimbo
I think (tradition aside) that it would be a better one.
hk1997
change the anthem to America the Beautiful. Everyone knows the words. The Lyrics roll off the tongue. Easy song to sing. Pleasant melody.
strungup
Yes, "America the Beautiful"!!! And it is not so militaristic.
crazy jane
I like "O, Canada"--it's melodic & reverent & singable. Though Mozart doesn't get credit for the tune, it reminds me an awful lot of one of the choruses from the Magic Flute. J.
Soundboot
I have sideline making mobile phone ringtones and recently did most of the worlds national anthems. To my surprise they were all very similar. Even Arabic and Asian countries have the same old military sounding dirge! Also, if the MCPS database is correct, there were two composers who did loads of the world's anthems (can't remember their names offhand). melimv
hey everyone knows Costa Rica's national anthem is the best! click here ok ok seriously. But I do have fond memories of singing it at my old school every week.
Ernst
In reply to: but the range makes it tough for an anthem - most folks can't cover it very well. Yeah, but it rings out of a fiddle pretty nice. Maybe there should be a law; not legal to sing, can only be played on violin.
Mark_W
Allow me to put in a good word for 'Tautos Himnas' by V. Kudirkos. Mostly banned in Lithuania during the Soviet era, it is one of the most solemnly moving tunes I know. My mother sometimes sang it to me as a child. altistitar*
Some African countries have the hymn part from Sibelius' Finlandia as their national anthem. It's ironic that it isn't the Finnish anthem instead. We have a march-like (although in 3/4 time) song, which I've heard was originally a German drinking song!
