oldsubguy
Just picked up a second hand viola (I usually play violin) to try it out. Like the tone and range but have a few ?s.... It needs new tuners and I wanted to try a gut string for once but in the shar catalog it says don't use tuners with gut. Any experience on this? Also any word on eudoxas? Primrose84
gut strings on tuners...never tried it...but i wouldnt, given the price of gut strings. olivs are wonderful viola strings. the A tends to unravel quickly after installation sometimes. i prefer a "eudoxa-oliv" C string to either the Eudoxa or the Oliv C. they are massively expensive, and no matter where you buy em they'll cost $70 (w/o the A string) if not a lot more. if price is no object give it a whirl. liana
olivs can sound great, but i had a few issues with them when i was using them... i found they took forever to stretch out, and by the time they had actually finally decided to stay in tune, they had gone false. yet i still used them for probably three or four years. go figure. -li
bleeviola
The reason not to use tuners with gut is that you can turn and turn and turn the tuners and it still won't get you up to pitch cause gut stretches a lot. Actually easier to get the pitch where you want it with pegs.
