MANFIO
With the exception of the the very very rich, in general women helped their husbands in their workshops. Ferdinando Garimberti's wife varnished his instruments. And, yes, Catarina Guarneri, give a look on Roger Hargrave's article about her, in Roger's website. David Burgess
We men tend to be high physical risk-takers (most likely genetic). This has its advantages and disadvantages, for societies.

No, you're all frightened to death that the other cavemen will laugh at you if you use the safety equipment, or don't try to turn a four-man-load into a one-man-load, etc.. Don't try to BS me on this, I've supervised field crews and written accident reports.

I should be on show at The Albert Hall...actually, I am going back to work. No, not selling on eBay, but playing either violin or viola. Maybe both, female multi tasking doesn't stretch to the ability of successfully playing a violin and viola at the same time. I'm available for weddings, funerals, Christenings, public houses, train stations, oh yes, orchestras, folking folk bands, The BBC...maybe not that last one. Just to make it very clear I do not involve myself with playing Mahler.

PhilipKT
I agree wholeheartedly with David. I am much more interested in the quality of the instrument than in the gender of the maker, but there are people who do care about such things and have slightly different priorities. Having said that, This is an old thread and I might have commented in it before, but David Caron did take on, eventually, one exceedingly gifted apprentice,(for want of a better word) by the name of Klarissa Petti. Here are pictures of her third cello. If you don’t like David’s work, you probably won’t like hers, but I love his, and therefore I love hers. When I broached the subject of getting another one to my wife, she gave me a hard look and said, “do you want two wives?” So I have one cello… If she doesn’t sell it before then, I will see it when I visit David in April, And I’m excited about playing it. The top is from the same log from whence came my own top, but the back is sourced from Germany. It will be fascinating to compare.

Well she’s not local, although I would be delighted If someone local bought it,so that I can try it out. But I do understand her point, actually. When you have a cello, you get used to it, all the virtues and flaws, And you’re not interested in owning another one. I almost never play as well on a student’s instrument as I do on my own. My cello is my cello. I love playing instruments, but I have no serious desire to own another one.
Craig Cowing
Wendela and Peter Moes, husband and wife, here in Connecticut. Yo Yo Ma owns one of their cellos to give an idea of the quality of their work. Way out of my league price-wise but I'm proud to have them here in my home state.
